When it comes to coating aluminium, achieving industry-leading paint adhesion requires a bespoke pre-treatment process. Many subcontractors coat a wide range of materials—steel, cast iron, glass, MDF, and more—all in the same production run. That often means either constantly switching chemicals (which is costly) or using a “one-size-fits-all” approach that compromises quality.
Not us. We only coat aluminium castings.
Our pre-treatment process is tailored specifically for aluminium alloys, ensuring the best possible bond between paint and surface. It’s this attention to detail that sets us apart—and helps your products stand out.
We’ve invested heavily in our capabilities—casting, CNC machining, measuring and testing, and powder coating—to offer our customers as close to a one-stop-shop as possible. One area we’re especially proud of is our powder coating plant, which was born out of a commitment to doing things properly. Using only quality products like Industry leading powder coating equipment from ITW GEMA to using powder paint from market leaders, AkzoNobel and having a bespoke 5 stage pre-treatment regime, means we can offer optimum paint adhesion to all of our powder coated, aluminium parts.
The basis of excellent powder coating is thorough preparation. The vast majority of powder coating failures can be traced to a lack of a suitable preparation. The pre-treatment process for aluminium alloy is very specific, this is why many volume powder coaters encounter issues as their pre-treatment process has to be a one-size-fits-all approach for the varied materials they coat.
The castings have to be clean and free of oils, grease and other contaminents before the powder is applied.
After the pre treatment stage has finished, the part have to be dried and free from any liquid/residue prior to powder being elecotrstatically applied.
To achieve a good powder paint bond with the substrate a full cure is required. Depending on the type of powder and the mass volume of the part, the paint is cured for approximately 20 minutes at temperatures ranging from 160 to 210 °C.
To get industry leading powder coating paint adhesion on cast aluminium parts, a bespoke pre-treatment process is needed prior to painting. Hallams invested heavily in an automated paint plant as many of our sub-contractor powder coating suppliers were dealing with a wealth of different materials, such as of steel/cast iron, glass, MDF and other materials, sometimes in the same production run. We needed a dedicated pre-treatment regime, specifically designed for aluminium alloy castings. Today, we think we’ve got that off to a fine art as we can offer powder coated parts that can withstand some of the most demanding environments.
Years of experience and a commitment to high quality for the customer underpin Hallam’s expertise in powder coating. Hallam’s close working relationships with leading powder suppliers, including AkzoNobel, ensure that for any project, Hallam can achieve the precise finish required, using only the best available materials.
